Cico and Luna shed Light on a Riddle
Since the middle of April Cico and Luna incubate the clutch of five, possibly six eggs. On April 27th stork fans of the Internet notice how one eggg is place into a hole at the egde of the eyrie. Then, in the afternoon of April 28th, one of the storks attempts to roll an egg out of the nest hollow. Finally he picks up the damaged egg with his beak and put it to the side. The events shed light on a riddle, which had not been observed during past nights, that frequent battles for the eyrie had damaged the eggs. The Project Leader Winfried Boehmer rules out the possibility that the parent storks themselves damaged the eggs. "The observed poking with the beaks serves to loosen the nest material. That eggs are damaged in the process is very unlikely," he says. It is not yet clear whether one or two eggs were damaged or whether, during the observations, we were dealing with the same egg which may been returned to the nest hollow over night. It has been established though, the the clutch still consists of four eggs.
