"Yougstars" bid "farewell" to Vetschau

The Vetschau Internet Storks spent their last night together at the eyrie. In the forenoon of Sunday, August 17th, at about twenty-five minutes past ten o'clock, the time had finally come to leave their nest not to return in the evening.

Our Youngstars will join a group of other storks and begin the flight to their winter quarters in Africa.

Best wishes from thousand of Stork Fans will accompany them. The Since March, innumerous stork friends followed the events at the Vetschau Internet Stork eyrie on the Internet as well as locally at the Stork Information Centre.

The young storks often depart earlier than the parent storks. They find their way without the help of their parents. First, the flight route leads to the southeast. All storks from Eastern and Central Europe follow a path over the Bosporus, over Turkey along the coast of the Mediterranean to Israel and finally across the Sinai to Egypt. From there along the Nile River to Central Africa. Many of them even continue on to South Africa at the beginning of December; a total distance of 6,000 miles (10.000 km).

Cico and Luna return regularly for a few hours to the eyrie. They undergird their connection to the eyrie with loud clatter and recuperate from the strain of raising the young storks. Not later than the end of August they will leave, notably separately. Only in spring will both return, baring a demise, to their ancestral eyrie and, as a rule, continue their relationship for another year.
