Departure to Africa
Now "our" parent storks have also "said" their farewell. Cico and Luna were at the eyrie together for the last time on August 26th at 6:20 a.m. and did not return in the evening.
Young and parent storks gather in groups at good fodder locations and embark during these days on their journey to the winter quarters in Africa. All storks from Eastern and Central Europe follow a path over the Bosporus Straits, over Turkey along the coast of the Mediterranean to Israel and finally across the Sinai to Egypt. From there along the Nile River to Central Africa. Many of them even continue on to South Africa at the beginning of December; a total distance of 6,000 miles (10.000 km).
At the time we express our heartfelt gratitude to the many supporters of the Stork Information Centre. Without their help the broadcast would have been impossible, and some of the measures to protect stork could not have been financed.
