The first Chicks of 2010 for the Internet Stork

During the night to May 10, the first two chicks of the Internet Storks in Vetschau, Spree Forest hatched. After the regular brood period of 32 days, the stork chicks made their way out of the egg shells. The tiny storks only weigh in at about three ounces, yet already show the typical behaviour of the parent storks, they lay their heads onto their backs and clatter.

Our Internet stork couple attends their offsprings very thoughtfully, cools them and loosens the nest material of the hollow regularly. The remaining eggs are further bred. One of the parent storks stays at the eyrie continuously while the other is on the hunt for fodder. The chicks need small animals such as earth worms, bugs and snails during the first days of their lives. The food is not given to the chicks as it is given to song birds by stuffing it into the beaks but the parent storks retch the food out of their gullet into the bottom of the nest from where the young ones pick it up themselves.

The upbringing of the young can be observed on the Internet on our website www.storchennest.de and on the monitor of the White Stork Information Centre in Vetschau, Spree Forest daily except Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
