Hatching of Chicks is completed
During the night of May 14 the fifth chick hatched at the Vetschau Internet eyrie.
The parent storks are now faced with bringing as much fodder as possible to the young ones. While one parent stork is on the hunt for earth worms, insects, mice and frogs, the other remains with the young to protect them against rain and wind as well as against nest robbers. How many of the five will survive will become obvious over the coming week. This time will show whether the food supply is sufficient for all chicks and how the chicks which hatched last will be able to overcome the lag of development between themselves and those hatched earlier. The number of young storks will then be instinctively regulated by the parents. The weakest will be thrown from the nest.
Currently, the young storks do not show any signs of illness or disease, pneumonia for instance as was observed during the last years.
The chicks appear to be strong and mobile.
So we hope this year for a brood success for Cico and Luna and keep our fingers crossed for them.
