The Young Storks have been ringed (banded)
On July 4th at 3:00 pm the young stork were fitted at their feet with stainles steel rings. Mrs. Katharina Illig of Luckau performed the procedure. She has much experience and is licensed to do the work. envia provided the necessary lifting equipment.
Ringing takes place so that the animals can be identified at any time. Through it, for instance, one can learn when they incubate or how old they may become. People often worry about the young ones jumping out of the nest or that the parent storks may abandon them. These worries are unfounded. In case of a threatening danger, such as the appearance of the ring applyer, the young spontaneously press themselves flat against the hollow of the nest with their necks and beaks stretched out, and remain totally motionless. This instinctive behaviour (acinese), feigns loss of the ability to move or death and offers the least incentive for hostilities. During the ringing this behaviour could be well observed. Without any difficulties they received the ring at their feet. The whole process was accomplished within fifteen minutes. The young ones' rigidity disappeared after twenty minutes when a parent stork arrived at the eyrie with food.
