Dropping of a Young Stork on June 12th
As in previous years the number of young storks was reduced to three by the parent storks. The smallest and least developed chick was thrown out of the nest by one of the parent storks. It may have had different reasons: Because "our" stork couple had started incubating after the laying of the first egg, the chicks hatched in two-day intervals, resulting in marked develpoment differences for each. All four young ones would only survive, if sufficient and beak sized food was supplied by the parent storks. Obviously the food biotope did not supply sufficient food. In addition on many occasions, the parent storks brought food chunks too large for the smallest chick to swallow. With this the littlest did not receive enough food, resulting in a poor development. For scientific reasons and not to endanger the young ones, it is our principle not to interfere with the events at the eyrie.
