Grand Stork Festival on May 5th at Vetschau
If you would like to get personally aquainted with and speak to the producer of "www.Storchennest.de" and the Stork-Team of "www.Storchenflug.de" you will have an opportunity to do so at the Stork Festival at Vetschau/Spreewald. The Nature Protection Federation of Germany (NABU), Regional Union Calau, will stage the 1st Vetschau Stork Festival on May 5th. "We offer to all visitors an eventful day with the Internet storks." promises Winfried Boehmer. A many facetted program will provide for a varied day for the whole family.
Opening: The day begins with a bird call walk at 7:00 am from the Stork Centre. At 10:00 am the opening ceremony will be held at the Wendish (Sorb) Church with three slide presentations covering the white storks situation in Germany, to the storks in Brandenburg, the German federal state with the largest stork population, and finally the life of storks in the Spree Forest itself.
The Day of the Open Door: Between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm visitors are invited to the Day of the Open Door at the White Stork Information Centre. Expert guided tours will be conducted every twenty minutes. Glances with the camera into the "Internet Stork Nest" are explicitly desired.
On the Road to Africa with the Storks: The Team of ARD and NABU, which filmed the stork trek, will be available after 12:00 noon in the festival plaza at the stork centre. At the Internet Cafè, the Team will present the stork trek on video and on the Internet, and report on its experiences .
Cultural Program with Stork Brew and a Giant's Brush: At 1:00 pm a mixed cultural program of a concert by the Vetschau Music and Singing Clubs will start in the festival plaza. Children's and students' groups will take the stage. Clubs, nature reserves and nature watches will introduce themselves. A lucky draw, a "handycraft street", the best pictures of the painting contest of the Lausatia Rundschau, painting with the Giant's Brush, guided tours through the Wendish Church (* see comment below), walks to the Repten Ponds and many other surprises will provide for variety. Marion Hirche of "Antenne Brandenburg" will be the Master of Ceremonies. Food and drink will be available at the at the Stork Centre and in the festival plaza. The special "Stork Brew" is a "must".
* comment: The Wends, also known as Sorbs, have been able to keep their Slavic ethnic identity for many centuries amidst German ethnic groups. They have survived in the Spree Forest of Lausatia and passed their cultural heritage from generation to genearation.
