"Red Legs" and "White Feather" - farewell forever?

Vetschau. The difficult season is over for the Internet storks. "Red Legs" and "White Feather", the offsprings of 2003, left the nest in the forenoon of August 20th. On the eve of the preceding day they received their farewell feast from their parents. Now and again only the parent storks look in on the Vetschau eyrie of storchennest.de - very good events to follow at the websites archives.

Is this a farewell forever, ask the viewers of the Forum? Will both storks be watched systematically in the future? Firstly: It does not have to be a farewell forever. With the onset of full maturity in three to four years it is quite possible that "White Feather" and "Red Legs" will return to the area of their place of birth. They will then belong to the Spree Forest storks to which the nature pfotographer and author Guenter Blutke will dedicate a book.

Secondly: Systematically observed, in the sense of a continuous watch, they will not be, because they are only fitted with bands and not transmitters. However, with the new ELSA bands they are easier to observe. "Red Legs" has the number H1132 and "White Feather" H1133. They are already the third generation of banded Internet storks. Many will remember last year's brood of: "Envi" (N633), "Nabi" (N634) and "Peace" (N635). Unfortunately, their bands are not that legible.

The year 2003 will go into the history books as a hot, dry and most scarce on food year. One in which the late hatched "Red Legs" and "White Feather" time of development was a full fortnight shorter than their 2002 predecessors. All in all the reproduction of the Lower Lusatia storks should be 20 to 30 percent below the average of the previous year. Nevertheless experts believe it to be possible that this low point will be overcome in coming years. It is hoped "Red Legs" and "White Feather" will actively participate in this endeavour. Happy trails!
