The How and Why of Watching Our Storks
The live picture technology applied by "envia.tel" and "envia" at the NABU-stork nest is enthusiastically received by website visitors. The process was tested at sporting events last year by "envia.tel". The new technology was made available for the duration of the stork season in the middle of March by both companies as sponsors, after a contract had been signed with the NABU Regional Federation Calau.
www.storchennest.de has registered a marked increase in site visits since the start of transmitting moving pictures. Number of visits: A 25-fold increase over the first month of the 2001 record season.
The Internet Project Manager, Falk Petro, underlines the value of all three stork observation sources: Webcam, Livestreaming and Picture Archives. Mr. Petro uses the following method of observation: First he examines the day's Picture Archives, then observes current activities with the Webcam. As Livestreaming delays the pictures by about a minute, he then has an opportunity to observe an instant replay of interesting events.
After the close of the stork season "envia.tel" and "envia" will use the gathered experience in other endeavours, so envia-Project Leader Dr. Wolfgang Gallas. Among others the technology will be used at major events in Saxony and Brandenburg. This will further enhance the Internet presence of "www.envia.de" . A webcam is connected to the "envia-world" website transmitting from the Fichtelberg (Fichtel Mountain @ 50°26'N - 12°57' East of Greenwich) near the Saxony, Germany/Czech Republic frontier) for two years now.
