Internet Storks say "goodbye" to Vetschau
The three Internet young storks of Vetschau roamed during the last week through the immediate area of the Stork Centre, visited the building market and inspected the camera (see photo of Bernd Rosien). Then the time had come, on Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. they started off from the eyrie and were not seen together again. Adi, Hadschi and Bospo had spent one last night together at the eyrie. Now only one of the young storks sits for hours at the eyrie. He waits in vain for a feeding from the parent storks. They were at the eyrie for the last time on Saturday. The young stork with band #H 2822 is watched continuously, should he have problems he will be caught and taken to a care facility.
The storks will now fly into the great, wide world. Best wishes from thousands of stork fans from all over the world will accompany them. Innumerable friends of the storks followed the happenings at Vetschau via the Internet and at the Stork Centre itself.
The young and parent storks will join a stork troup and start the flight to their winter quarters in Africa. Surprisingly the young ones will often leave before the parent storks do. They find their way without the parents. First the flight will head southeast. All storks from Eastern and Central Europe cross the Straits of Bosporus, then Turkey, along the coast of the Mediterranean to Isreal, finally across the Sinai to Egypt along the Nile to Central Africa. Many will even move as far as South Africa at the beginning of December, a total distance of 6,000 miles (10.000 km)
