Adoption of Hugo
On Friday, the 9th of June a stork adoption came to pass at "our" stork couple's eyrie. A waive-chick was placed next to Meto into the nest. The parent stork, which was at the eyrie at the time, flew away momentarily and eyed the alien chick suspiciously, nibbled on it again and again, however, he/she was not aggressive. Hugo, the chick's name, begged, cawed and clattered. Yet the parent stork did not sit down to warm the chicks. We were anxious until half past one in the afternoon. Then a change occurred. The arriving stork fed the chicks immediately and took them soon under his/her wings. With this the critical phase has been overcome. Nevertheless, there still is no absolute certainty for Hugo's safety. Only the coming night and tomorrow can show this. Originally, we had intended to "sneak in" a second chick. However, because the age difference between Hugo and Meto is substantial, we will refrain from doing it.
The other chick will go to the Loburg Stork Sanctuary. There Christoph Kaatz can give him the best of care, and at the same time proceed with a stork adoption. Heike and Frank Arendholz ("Woody") will look after the transportation. Everything has already been voted upon and authorized by the stork protectors and the wildlife protection authority.
