Investigation into the Cause of Death
The corpse of Lenka is examined at the University of Berlin's Institute for Fowl Diseases. It is not certain whether the examinations will totally reveal the cause of death. For instance, dead bacteria may be found in frozen animals. The toxicological examination has its problems, should the exact harmful substances be unknown. There are more than a thousand possibilities which come into play. As soon as any results are available, we will report.
The Executive of NABU, Regional Association Calau, has decided to order a study into the root cause investigation. Here even white storks are to be examined, the fodder and its places of origin, the make-up of the nest material, and agricultural areas amongst other things. The results will be not only of interest to the stork couple at Vetschau but also to the general public.
The investigations are not cheap. We estimate them to cost several thousand Euros, however, thanks to the donations the needed sum will surely be realized.
