The first Bicycle Tour to Stork Eyries in the Vetschau Vicinity
In conjunction with the Day of the open Door at the White Stork Information Centre, the NABU-Calau invites you to the first bicycle tour to stork eyries and along the Stradow Ponds on Saturday, May 5th. During this first tour the question of how many and which eyries are occupied and whether a good stork year will emerge. During the subsequent tours on June 30th and July 28th we will ascertain how many chicks have hatched and how many young storks have actually become fledglings respectively.
The time and meeting place of the meeting is set for 9:00 a.m. at the White Stork Information Centre of Lower Lusatia in Vetschau for all dates. At the start all participants will look in at the "Internet Storks" eyrie and will here news about Cico and Luna.
The tour of about ten miles will last about 2½ hours and will lead to all stork eyries of the vicinity. Winfried Boehmer will take over the first tour and report on the life of storks and the history of the individual eyries. In 2005 thousands of the so-called Eastern Travelers were missing and many storks did not breed. In Lower Lusatia only 43% of the young storks became fledglings in comparison to 2004. The stork population of Lower Lusatia sank from 401 brood pairs in 2001 to 313 in 2005. Unfortunately, the population has not recovered after that troublesome year. In 2006 the white stork caregivers only counted 312 pairs. What are the reasons? How can we help the storks so that the number will again increase? These are all questions Winfried Boehmer will answer knowledgeably. Of course, other bird species may be observed. With a little luck whooper swans and ospreys will be some of these.
