The Stork Chicks were "christened"
Our three "Internets Stork" chicks at Vetschau/Spree Forest were christened. Children groups, school classes and Internet stork fans had made more than 70 suggestions. Along with the Vetschau Witja-Daycare group Winfried Boehmer, the NABU Project Leader, undertook the "christening". The children sang and recited Sorbian and German stork songs poems.
Finally the name secret was revealed. Our three "wobbly heads", as they are lovingly called, were named: Chess, Mila and Gwen.
Chess was suggested by the 4th graders of the Astrid-Lindgren Elementary School of Luebbecke; Mila, the Sorbian short form for Michael, was the suggestion of the Vetschau Witja-Daycare group; and Gwen had chosen "Graulebooz" from the Internet stork fans. Gwen = white, beautiful is taken from the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar (Jennifer).
Two of the three chicks hatched on May 17th, the third peeled himself out of the shell two days later. All three chicks are in great shape and their parents, Cico and Luna, take lovingly care of them.
The rain of last night's thunderstorm enriched the availability of fodder. Earth worms, snails and other varieties of small animals the parent storks find everywhere abundantly. The larger chunks, such as mice or snakes, the chick cannot swallow as yet and are eaten by Cico and Luna themselves.
