The second Bicycle Tour to Stork Eyries in the Vetschau Vicinity

NABU-Calau invites you to the second bicycle tour to the stork eyries around the Stradow ponds on Saturday, June 30th. On this second tour the question, which known eyries are occupied and whether new nests have been created. In addition it will be ascertained how many chicks have hatched. From the result it can be deduced how successfully the 2007 stork season progresses and whether a good stork year emerges.

During the third tour on July 28th it will be noted how many young stork will actually become fledglings.

The meeting place will be for both tours at 9:00 a.m. at the White Stork Information Centre of Lower Lusatia at Vetschau/Spreewald. Before starting out all participants will look into the eyrie of the "Internet Storks" and hear news about Cico and Luna and their chicks Chess, Mila and Gwen. The distance of the tour is about ten miles and lasts about 2½ hours and leads to all stork eyries in the vicinity. Heinz-Juergen Boemack is in charge and gives information of the life of storks and of the history of the individual eyries.

In 2005 thousands of the so-called Eastern Travelers went missing and many storks did not breed. In Lower Lusatia only 46% of the young storks became fledglings compared to 2004. The population of formerly 401 brood couples in 2001 sank to 313 in 2005. Unfortunately, the population has not recovered since that troublesome year. In 2006 the stork caretakers counted only 312 couples. What is the problem? How can we help the storks to increase their numbers? All questions which Heinz-Juergen Boemack will answer expertly. Of course, other bird species can be observed. With a little luck the whooping swan, osprey and penduline tit will belong to them.
