Arrival at the nest:
March 28
5:30 p.m.
1st stork arriving the nest (male stork)
March 30
6:15 p.m.
2nd stork arriving the nest
March 31
through April 11
The couple splits up, several times female storks come to the nest; but the female storks where absent for some days
April 12 Begin of a lasting relationship of the couple
Eggs in the nest:
April 17
07:00 a.m.
1st egg laid
April 19
April 21
2nd und 3nd egg laid
April 22
08:00 a.m.
One egg lies on the rim of the nest. We guess, this was caused by a few fights in the nest. From time to time the storks try to push it back to the center of the nest, but without any result.
April 23 4th egg laid
April 24
10:00 a.m.
One stork got the egg back to the center of the nest. Now it is incubated, too. We do not know, if the egg is damaged.
April 25 5th egg laid
Start of brooding:
April 17 The storks started brooding after the first egg was laid. This deviates from the norm. In most cases the storks start brooding when there are already several eggs laid.
Hatching of the young:
The stork nestlings get their names from the NABU or ABM collaborators who found them first.
May 19 1st young bird hatched out (Ilona)
May 21 2nd young bird dicovered (Norbert)
May 23 3rd young bird hatched out (Sabine)
May 25
2:00 p.m.
4th young stork hatched out - two peculiarities:
  • usually the young birds hatch at night, not at daytime.
  • the eggshell is not white, but speckled with green.
We do not have any explanation for that.
Loss of nestlings:
May 29
1:30 p.m.
The youngest four-day old bird was killed by the female stork. Like the years before the storks regulated the amount of nestlings to three. One reason might be the lack of food for feeding the nestlings, like in other places, too. The parental storks are forced to ensure that their nestlings are able to leave the nest in summer. Therefore they have no choice.
Flight practice:
July 20 The young storks have their first flight practices.
First free flights:
July 23 The most courageous of the young storks starts a round trip.
Leaving home:
August 15 The young storks are fed for the last time. They finally leave the nest. Only the parental storks are still staying in the nest overnight.
Last visit:
August 17 One of the parental stork visited the nest for the last time. Then the nest was empty.
