Dropping of the 2nd Stork chick because of lack of foodStorchenzentrum hat geschrieben:Abwurf des 2.

After the last Friday of the NABU Internet Vetschau storks from the first chick was killed and thrown off this morning around 8:30 the next dropping happened. One of the adult storks feeding their chicks normally and then killed one of his youngs. Since all chicks were healthy and apparently the same size, this was not foreseen
We assume that the parent storks are due to the extreme dryness in our area Vetschau they do not find enough small food animals. The youngs at this age need earthworms, slugs and small insects. It is lacking due to lack of rainfall at the moment.
We have been notified that it nests in other dropp outs occurred.
We humans perceive this as cruel, but in the nature of such behaviors serve to preserve the species. If the food habitats are not productive enough adult storks "regulate" the number of the youngs and thus secure the remaining youngs survival.
The youngs need to be fully fledged in mid-August and is strong enough that they meet in late summer, the massive haul flights to Africa in the winter quarters.

Hello,
I have been gone for a few days and it is so sad to see that two of the chicks have been removed from the nest. I did not watch the videos....much too upsetting
I understand the parents reasons and hope that the two remaining chicks will continue to grow strong and healthy.
Best wishes to everyone,
Cheral

Just returned to the nest after two weeks away, and read the sad news.
So sorry to hear about the terrible drought problems, but animals are realists...they know best and want to have successful fledges. Apparently the way things were going, none would have survived....they need rain and food.......and SOON.
We will keep watching and hoping and loving the strong hearts of our wonderful birds.

Good morning.
Hello Foxfire, you are right, they did not have another choice in this terrible situation.
And they do not kill their offspring just for fun. So the remaining chicks have the best chance to survive.
Looks like they may have a little rain during the next 2 days.
