Luna left and some minutes later Cico came with some bites.

Now Luna came with food and Cico left.

The chicks do not go hungry to bed and it is raining.

10 pm Cico is back.

Dropping of the 2nd Chick due to Scarcity of Fodder

After the NABU Internet storks at Vetschau killed and dropped the first chick last Friday the next one followed today at about 8:30 am. One of the parent storks fed the chicks normally and killed one right after. Because all chicks are of the same size and apparently in good health this was not anticipated. We assume that the parent storks, due to the enormous dryness in the Vetschau district, do not find enough small fodder. The young ones, at this age, require earth worms, snails and small insects. The absence of precipitation at the moment is the main reason.

We were informed of similar events at other eyries.

We human beings think this to be cruel, however, in nature this behaviour serves to conserve the specie. If the nourishment biotope does not provide enough, the parent storks control the number of off springs and thusly secure the survival of the remaining chicks.

The young ones have to be fledglings by the middle of August and build up enough strength to be able to overcome the long distance to their winter quarters in Africa.

Thanks again for all the photos and videos. Very glad to see that there has been some rain and Cico and Luna have been able to bring more food to the chicks.

Aren't the chicks still small enough to be in danger when they are left alone in the nest? I guess the parents feel they must take that risk to find food.
