WOW - Who was it this morning that mentioned Scottish juvenile ospreys moving south and could land on the Dyfi nest?

Do ospreys read Facebook?

There's a Scottish juvenile on Monty's upper nest right now - Ringed Blue CF3. Will try and find out where she is from....

Just spoken to Roy Dennis in Scotland.

He ringed this chick on July 5th this year himself in a nest in Sutherland, right in the north east of Scotland.

She was the biggest of FOUR chicks!!

It is extremely rare for ospreys to have four eggs and four chicks. Let's hope she's catching her own fish by now and that she makes it down to Africa safely.

Loch Garten - Schottland. Die zwei Fischadler - Jungs haben die große Reise nach Afrika begonnen
And the race is on... 28 Aug 2013 3:45 PM

And the race is on! With Oighrig in the lead by a few countries and an ocean between him and the Loch Garten nest. Breagha is bringing up the rear, dawdling his way down the length of the UK, taking a tour of a few RSPB reserves and obviously in no rush to hit his wintering ground. Oighrig has now made it as far as Spain – will he bypass his older sibling, Caledonia, who is still remaining faithful to the Rio Guadalquivir river area.

Mike has provided us with the following up to date information on Our Boys travels from 25th-27th August.

BREAGHA

On 25th August he initially moved East to the coast then travelled SSE over St Andrews crossing the Firth of Forth at Pittenweem then SSW over North Berwick before coming to roost at 19.00 GMT near Bentpath in Dumfries & Galloway. A journey of 150 km.

On 26th August he left around 07.00 GMT travelling SW over Campfield Marsh RSPB before crossing the Irish Sea near St Bee’s Head RSPB reserve reaching the coast of Anglesey at Llangbadrig. He then decided a royal visit was in order as he crossed RAF Valley at around 16.00 GMT passing near the RSPB Valley Wetlands. He left Wales flying over Bardsey Island finally crossing the coast of Pembrokeshire where he roosted overnight at 19.00 GMT near Newport. A great journey of 385 km taking in many RSPB reserves en route.

It was a little easier day on 27th August as he only covered 190 kms. He travelled South from Newport crossing over the Bristol Channel arriving on the coast of Cornwall at Crackington Haven at 13.00 GMT then travelled SW to near St Germans, West of Plymouth, where he roosted overnight on the tidal flats of the River Tiddy estuary.

OIGHRIG

Oighrig left his overnight roost in Normandy on 25th August at around 05.00 GMT and travelled South into Brittany, passed over St Nazaire in the Loire and on to the coast of the Bay of Biscay. He stopped overnight at 19.00 GMT having travelled a mammoth 500 km to a well-earned rest 8 km SW of the small town of Gastes in S Aquitaine. He was on the coast near a fresh water reservoir.

By comparison, 26th August was a slight day of leisure as he travelled only 150 km . He stopped at 11.00 GMT for around 4 hours along the River Adour, SE of Saint-Jean-de-Marsacq. Presumably a re-fuelling stop. At 17.00 GMT he changed direction to SW crossing into Spain where he stopped to roost at 19.00 GMT, NW of Auritz in the Navarre region.

27th August was another long journey of 465 km. He set off SE through the La Rioja and Castille & Leon regions into La Mancha passing East of Madrid to roost at 19.00 GMT on a stretch of water in a National Park West of Ossa de Montiel.

Breagh. Gaelic for beautiful/handsome and I’m sure you’ll all agree very appropriate for this good looking osprey. Pronounced bree-ah
Bild
Our other boy is Oighrig. Another Gaelic name, which means ‘new speckled one’ but when you translate it into an English name, it is Africa (which could end up being ironic should he end up in Spain like his older sibling, Caledonia). Pronounced oy-rick.

Dyfi - Wales
Bore day - DAY 63

It's Clarach's birthday today - she's exactly nine weeks old. She's also been flying for the last 12 days.

Quite an impressive change in nine weeks.

Clarach and Cerist often look towards the ground as if there is something morning around. This is what they were looking at yesterday..

Good job he wasn't around last week!

In Australien hat man die Eier aus dem Nest genommen und will sie untersuchen.
Vielleicht findet man so den Grund, warum dort nichts geschlüpft ist.

Dyfi - Wales
This blog is written by non-other than Paul Wildlifewriter.

Glesni was last seen at Cors Dyfi on 31st August just after 08:00 BST. This is the final nest camera image recorded of her for this season.

Glesni has started her migration even though the fledglings are still not ready to undertake theirs. This may seem like a reckless and uncaring abandonment, but in fact some of the reasons for her departure have the youngsters' own future as a basis. The first and most important point to understand is that it was never in Glesni's “job description” to wait until they were ready to go...

Once the chicks had fledged, her work for the season was effectively complete. She had incubated them, brooded them, fed them and protected them for a hundred (and one) days but, once they could fly, there was no need for the same standard of care. The only practical tasks left are the provision of more food and the defence of the nest site from other ospreys – and in truth, both of these are Monty's department....

Fischadler - Loch of the Lowes - Schottland.

Das Ospreyküken hat den großen Flug nach Westafrika begonnen!

Blue YZ on her way!

Posted on September 6, 2013 by Jonathan

Exciting news – Blue YZ has begun her maiden migration! We downloaded the latest batch of satellite data this morning to discover she had departed yesterday morning and spent her first night away from Loch of the Lowes on the Isle of Man.
Bild
Between 10 and 11am she headed SSE to Dhu Loch, a small loch a couple of miles from Loch of the Lowes which she had visited on previous days. From there she headed SW and by 12pm she was 10km (6 miles) to the north east of Crieff. By 1pm she had left Perthshire altogether, crossing over the River Forth to the SE of Stirling.

Blue YZ continued to make good progress throughout the rest of the afternoon, travelling due south through Lanarkshire, and by 5pm had reached the coast of Dumfries & Galloway, midway between Wigtown & Kirkcudbright. Continuing SW out into the Irish Sea she passed over the north coast of the Isle of Man between 6 and 7pm, roosting for the night in trees in a steep sided valley.
